What to Tell Students

Have you submitted your service request?

Before students can schedule exams, instructors need to request and be approved for FSU Testing Center services.

Requesting Services

Are your students required to test in the main campus Testing Center, with an off-campus proctoring facility, or with an online proctor? Make sure they are aware of test dates and location, your policy for makeups, and their testing day responsibilities. Students must designate a proctor, pay fees (where applicable), schedule an appointment, and bring any required materials to their testing location (while leaving prohibited materials behind).

Recommended Syllabus Language

Copy and paste the instructions below into your course syllabus (or use the Canvas syllabus template to automatically update your course site). Be sure to also include additional instructions based on where your students will be testing (eg, FSU Testing Center, approved proctoring facility, or with an online proctor).

Proctored Exams

This course requires proctored exams administered by the main campus Testing Center, an approved off-campus proctor or proctoring facility, or an authorized online proctoring service.

  1. You are responsible for scheduling your exam appointment(s) with the testing provider and familiarizing yourself with their policies, including when to arrive, what to bring and not bring, allowed and prohibited activities, and instructions for missed appointments.
  2. Please visit testing.fsu.edu for instructions on taking your exam with an approved provider.
Proctored Testing Fees
  • Main Campus Testing Center: Course exams administered in the main campus Testing Center are free for FSU students.
  • Panama City Testing Provider: Course exams for Panama City students are proctored free of charge at Gulf Coast State College Testing Center. Please review the FSU Panama City Proctored Exams page for instructions.
  • All Other Testing Providers: Expect to pay the provider a fee for proctoring your exam. Fees vary by provider, and some require pre-payment. Financial aid may be used to cover the cost of proctored testing.

Testing with an Approved, Off-Campus Proctor

Off-campus testing is available to instructors teaching online courses and who have requested and been approved for services. We will coordinate with the student's selected proctor. Make sure students know they will have to pay the proctoring facility a testing fee and be sure to review our instructions for preparing your exam for off-campus testing.

Testing AT an Approved, OFF-CAMPUS Testing Facility

You are responsible for selecting an approved proctor within the first two weeks of the semester (or first week of summer), scheduling your exam appointment(s) with the facility, and familiarizing yourself with its policies regarding exam fees, when to arrive, what to bring and not bring, allowed and prohibited activities, and instructions for missed appointments:

  1. Review the FSU Testing Center's Selecting a Proctor page and follow all applicable instructions.
  2. Use the Proctor Designation System to locate and select an approved proctor near you. Be sure to verify all information about the proctor (testing fees, address, email, telephone number, proctor name, required ID, etc.) with the proctor site before you make your selection. Please contact me if you are unable to access an approved proctor.
  3. Follow the selected facility's instructions for scheduling your appointment and determining the facility's testing fee, including when it must be paid. Testing centers often require pre-payment, and the receipt for payment may serve as an entry ticket to the proctored exam session.
  4. If you fail to make an appointment for testing or miss your appointment, [INSERT YOUR POLICY AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKEUP EXAMS].

See [INSERT LOCATION IN COURSE SITE] for specific exam dates and the materials I allow and don't allow during your test.

Testing with an Online Proctor

Online proctoring is intended for use in distance learning courses and those in which it is the most effective solution. For optimal exam security, we encourage all instructors to make use of in-person testing options whenever possible. Use of online proctoring may be a solution for students unable to access an affordable, nearby testing facility or when appointments for makeup exams are unavailable. If you wish to allow students to use an online proctor in your course, please be mindful of costs and try to provide a free testing option when available (eg, the main campus Testing Center for local online students). Also, be sure to disclose costs in your course syllabus.

Testing with Honorlock

Exams in this course may be taken using Honorlock, an online proctoring service that allows you to take a proctored exam from the comfort of your home. During your exam, you will be monitored and recorded, and a live proctor may appear via webcam if unusual activity is detected. You will pay Honorlock $4.45 per exam or $9.95 per course. The per course payment includes all exams in a single course. Financial aid may be used to cover the cost of proctored testing. If you are unable to use an online proctoring service to complete your exams, please contact me within the first 2 weeks of the semester.

  1. Review and follow all instructions for Using an Online Proctor, paying special attention to technical requirements, procedures for designating a proctor, and fees for testing.
  2. Before starting your exam session with Honorlock, make sure you have access to a well-lit, quiet area with a clean workspace. You must be alone in the room when testing.
