Testing Online with SmarterProctoring

Exam Fees

Students pay $13-29 per exam depending on the designated exam duration.

SmarterProctoring Live is an online proctoring service that uses professionally trained proctors to monitor exam sessions. Your webcam and computer desktop will be recorded. Live online proctoring helps protect the security and integrity of online course exams while providing students with the flexibility to test from home or another convenient location. Your instructor will let you know if SmarterProctoring is available for your course. If so, you will schedule and pay for an exam appointment directly with SmarterProctoring. Follow the steps below to get started.

STEP 1
Confirm SmarterProctoring is available for your course

You may use SmarterProctoring only if your instructor allows it. Consult your course syllabus if you are unsure which proctoring options are permitted in your course.

STEP 2
Update your proctor in the Proctor Selection System

Your instructor will offer an in-person testing option in addition to SmarterProctoring. Please let us know which option you will be using for your exam(s) by logging into the Proctor Selection System, identifying your course, and selecting your chosen proctor. If your course is not listed in the system, consult your syllabus or instructor to make sure you have permission to use an online proctor.

STEP 3
Make sure your computer meets technical requirements

You will need a reliable internet connection, webcam, microphone, laptop or desktop computer (Mac, PC, or Chromebook) running an updated version of Google Chrome. Your computer will need to have built-in or external speakers (headsets and earbuds are not allowed). See SmarterProctoring Live’s system requirements for specifics. We recommend running a system check at least two hours before your appointment to give yourself adequate time to troubleshoot any technical issues.

STEP 4
Request accommodations for extra time through your instructor

If you are approved by the Office of Accessibility Services for extra-time accommodations on exams, review the Need Accommodations? page for instructions on sharing those with your instructor. Your instructor will need to add approved accommodations in SmarterProctoring so the correct exam appointment length is available for scheduling and your proctor is informed of any allowed exceptions. Students with extra-time accommodations will pay the same fee for their exam as those without extra-time accommodations.

STEP 5
Schedule your appointment and pay exam fees

Schedule your appointment at least 2 weeks before regular exam windows and four weeks before final exam windows. Expect to pay SmarterProctoring directly when scheduling your exam. Fees range from $13 to $29 per exam, depending on the exam’s established duration.

Appointment slots fill quickly, especially during peak testing times. Late scheduling fees apply if you make your appointment less than 72 hours in advance, and waiting to schedule may result in limited or no appointment availability.

STEP 6
Set up your environment

Your proctor will conduct a thorough scan of your testing environment. Make sure you test at a flat workspace and are alone in a quiet, well-lit room. Public and shared spaces are not allowed. Have your FSUCard or government-issued photo ID ready, as well as a handheld mirror or mobile device so you can show the proctor your monitor and keyboard. (Your proctor will guide you through powering down your mobile device before starting the exam.)

Unless explicitly permitted by your instructor, use of a secondary or wearable electronic device (mobile phone, laptop, tablet, earbuds, headphones, fitness tracker, watch, smart glasses, etc.) is prohibited during your exam. If you need to use the restroom, please do so before the exam begins.

STEP 7
Start your SmarterProctoring exam session at your scheduled time

At exam time, log into your Canvas course site and click on the SmarterProctoring link from the course navigation. From the SmarterProctoring dashboard, select your exam, then follow prompts to start your exam session. The button to start your session will appear no earlier than 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

We strongly recommend beginning your appointment on time or a few minutes early, so you have time to resolve any issues that may come up during the check-in process.

Fees range from $13 to $29 per exam, depending on the exam’s established duration. Check the course syllabus or Canvas site to determine the exam duration. Please note you must schedule 72 hours in advance to avoid late scheduling fees.

No. Students with approved extra-time accommodations will pay the same fee for their exam as those without extra-time accommodations.

Yes! Proctored testing fees are considered an educationally related expense, just like textbooks and supplies. Please note that proctored exam fees are charged directly by a third-party company and will not appear on your student invoice. These fees are not automatically covered by financial aid. However, if you receive a financial aid refund, you may use those funds to pay the proctoring company directly.

Scheduling Your Appointment

You should schedule your appointment at least two weeks before regular exam windows and four weeks before final exam windows. Because SmarterProctoring Live uses human proctors, appointment availability is limited and may fill quickly during high-demand periods. Schedule as early as possible to have the greatest selection of appointment times.

Late scheduling fees do not guarantee appointment availability. While appointments may be available less than 72 hours before an exam, students should not rely on late scheduling. Appointment availability is limited and can fill quickly, especially on Fridays and during midterm and final exam weeks.

If no appointments are available when you attempt to schedule, check the scheduling page periodically to see whether additional appointment times become available. If you are unable to schedule an appointment, refer to your course syllabus for your instructor's policy regarding missed exams.

You may be able to reschedule or cancel your appointment through your SmarterProctoring dashboard. If rescheduling is available, your payment will transfer to the new appointment. If rescheduling is unavailable, you will need to cancel your appointment and schedule a new one. When you click the Cancel Appointment button on your SmarterProctoring dashboard, SmarterProctoring automatically begins processing your refund.

Refund eligibility is determined by SmarterProctoring. Students may be eligible for refunds in situations such as approved cancellations, duplicate charges, qualifying technical issues, or instructor-initiated exam cancellations. View SmarterProctoring’s Student Refund Policy for details.
