Testing Online with SmarterProctoring

Exam Fees

Students pay $13-29 per exam depending on the designated exam duration.

SmarterProctoring Live is an online proctoring service that ensures the security and integrity of online course exams. Your instructor will let you know if SmarterProctoring is available for your course. If so, you will schedule and pay for an exam appointment directly with SmarterProctoring. Your webcam and computer desktop will be recorded, while a professionally trained proctor monitors your exam in real time. Follow the steps below to get started with SmarterProctoring.

STEP 1

Confirm SmarterProctoring is available for your course

You may use SmarterProctoring only if your instructor allows it. Consult your course syllabus if you are unsure which proctoring options are permitted in your course, being careful to note which online proctor is allowed (eg, Honorlock or SmarterProctoring).

STEP 2

Update your proctor in the Proctor Selection System

If your instructor offers an in-person testing option in addition to SmarterProctoring, please let us know which option you will be using for your exam(s) by logging into the Proctor Selection System, identifying your course, and selecting your chosen proctor. If your course is not listed in the system, consult your syllabus or instructor to make sure you have permission to use an online proctor. Your instructor may not be using Testing Center services to coordinate their exams and, in that case, you can skip this step!

STEP 3

Make sure your computer meets technical requirements

You will need a reliable internet connection, webcam, microphone, laptop or desktop computer (Mac, PC, or Chromebook) running an updated version of Google Chrome, and your FSUCard or government-issued ID. See SmarterProctoring Live’s system requirements for specifics. We recommend running a system check at least two hours before your appointment to give yourself adequate time to troubleshoot any technical issues.

STEP 4

Request accommodations for extra time through your instructor

If you are approved by the Office of Accessibility Services for extra-time accommodations on exams, review the Need Accommodations? page for instructions on sharing those with your instructor. Your instructor can add approved accommodations in SmarterProctoring so your proctor is informed of any allowed exceptions. Students with extra-time accommodations will pay the same fee for their exam as those without extra-time accommodations.

STEP 5

Schedule your appointment and pay exam fees

Because SmarterProctoring employs human proctors for exam monitoring, you must schedule an appointment at least 72 hours in advance, just as you would when testing with an in-person proctor. Expect to pay SmarterProctoring directly when scheduling your exam. Fees range from $13 to $29 per exam, depending on the exam’s established duration.

STEP 6

Set up your environment

Prepare your space so it's ready for the series of checks your proctor will make before your exam begins. Make sure you have your FSUCard or government-issued photo ID ready and are alone at a desk or table in a quiet, well-lit room. (Public spaces and shared areas are not allowed.) Unless explicitly permitted by your instructor, use of a secondary or wearable electronic device is prohibited. This includes mobile phones, laptops, tablets, earbuds, headphones, fitness trackers of any kind, smart watches, smart glasses, etc. If you need to use the restroom, please do so before the exam begins.

SmarterProctoring Frequently Asked Questions

Expand/Collapse FAQs

Why is FSU using SmarterProctoring Live?

Live, online proctoring provides enhanced security for online course exams and enables instructors to offer distance learning students an alternative to testing at an approved, off-campus proctoring site. Taking an exam online with a trained SmarterProctoring proctor is similar to testing at an off-campus location but without the need to travel to the nearest facility or test within the scheduling windows set by the facility.

How much will it cost to test with SmarterProctoring?

Fees range from $13 to $29 per exam, depending on the exam’s established duration. Check the course syllabus or Canvas site to determine the exam duration established by your instructor. Please note you must schedule 72 hours in advance to avoid late scheduling fees. See the Frequently Asked Questions page of this site for general information about using financial aid to pay for proctored testing fees.

Designated Exam Duration Fee
1-30 minutes $13
31-60 minutes $18
61-90 minutes $21.50
91-120 minutes $24
121-180 minutes $29

Will I pay more because I have an extra-time accommodation?

No. Students with an extra-time accommodation will pay the same fee to test as students with no extra-time accommodation.

Why is SmarterProctoring Live more expensive than Honorlock Live Pop-In?

Because a professionally trained proctor is actively monitoring your exam in real time, you will pay more to test with SmarterProctoring Live than you would with an AI-based online proctoring service such as Honorlock. However, if you are an online student who relies on an approved, off-campus testing site to proctor your exams, you will find SmarterProctoring’s fees to be less than or comparable to those charged by in-person facilities. Please note that if you are able to access the FSU Testing Center on the main campus or Gulf Coast State College Testing Center (Panama City students), neither of those facilities charge online students for proctored course exams.
